Apkallu ‘Wise’, ‘Destroyer’
The Apkallu and Abgal are intriguing figures deeply rooted in ancient Mesopotamian culture and mythology. Derived from cuneiform inscriptions, these terms refer to beings associated with wisdom and knowledge.

In their most common form, the Apkallu are described as seven demigods who possess a unique combination of human and fish or bird-like characteristics. Often referred to as the Seven Sages, these Apkallu are synonymous with wisdom in ancient Mesopotamia. They are mentioned in several literary texts and are associated with imparting wisdom to humanity.

It is worth noting that the Apkallu are sometimes connected to specific primeval kings. These sages, revered for their wisdom, were believed to have existed prior to the Great Flood - a catastrophic event mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh. However, post-deluge, the sages are considered human and distinguished by the term "Ummanu" instead of Apkallu.

Furthermore, the Apkallu-Abgal epithet is used as a mark of wisdom or knowledge for both kings and gods. It symbolizes the revered status of these figures and their ability to impart wisdom to others. This emphasizes the integral role of wisdom in the societal hierarchy of ancient Mesopotamia.

In addition to their metaphorical representations, Apkallu is also associated with figurines used in apotropaic rituals. These figurines feature fish-man hybrids representing the Seven Sages, as well as other entities like bird-headed creatures. These objects were believed to possess protective qualities against evil forces, underscoring the importance placed on wisdom and divine intervention in warding off malevolent spirits.

Interestingly, the Apkallu also appear in the works of Berossus, a Babylonian priest and historian. In his writings, these fish-men are described as emissaries sent by the gods to share knowledge with humanity. The first Apkallu, Oannes (or Uanna), is said to have taught the creation myth known as the En?ma Eli?. This further highlights the association of Apkallu with divine wisdom and their role as conduits of sacred knowledge.

In conclusion, the Apkallu and Abgal hold immense significance in ancient Mesopotamian culture. As embodiments of wisdom and knowledge, they occupy a central position in mythology, literature, and religious practices. Whether portrayed as demigods, protective figurines, or messengers from the gods, these enigmatic beings reflect the high value placed on wisdom and the pursuit of divine understanding in the fascinating world of ancient Mesopotamia.
